Researchers say as few as 15% of jobs are publicly posted or filled by people outside the organisation.

Positioning yourself for the hidden job market through networking or connecting with people doing the work you want to do.

This can be as easy as chatting with a friend whether it is through the religious organisation you go to, running into your former colleagues or staying in touch through Professional Associations, Alumni Clubs or coming together for a common purpose.

Professor Krumboltz from Stanford University and a career theorist describes “planned happenstance” theory of being open to possibilities how your career may take you. Dr Jim.Bright of Vanderbilt University was in Singapore to share his Chaos Theory of being curious and talking to people, trying new things.

My personal job search process follows closely to what was described. Although, I would have written and applied to companies etc, the best match for my career and out of the box thinking usually comes from job search ideas through networking. Some whom I am not even close to. What we call weak ties.

Critical to the process is allowing yourself to have conversations or coffee chats (informational interview) with people. Attitudes such as:
Curiosity
Persistence
Flexibility
Optimism
Asking questions, having small talk. Talking to people for ideas.

Here are some suggestions for people interested in firms such as Asset Management, Private Equity, and Venture Capital.

Job Search in the Investment Bank comes early. However, if you are looking to apply to the regional banks, or internships in Asset Management or Venture Capital, these can come adhoc, starting from December 2018 to Jan-March 2019. Networking is best, as some of these firms may not have a full time person managing the recruitment process. But the upside, is that what you see is what you get, the person you’re speaking to may be your direct supervisor.

Here are some of the banks recruiting for summer internship 2019, and from heresay, some students have already received calls for online screening interviews.

Its internship application and interviewing time. One of the common questions I get from students are: what competencies should I include in my resume?

Look no further.

1. Examine the job advertisement
Most companies include competencies that help candidates succeed. Sometimes its under the Key Requirements or the Qualifications section

2. Full time applications
Even those that do not include the competences, such as those from DHL for their data science internship (below), will have a detailed writeup in their full time job applications. Similar competencies in identified by different full time opportunities in same company hint at the company culture and values.

3. Company website
Check out the company website. “What we look for in our candidates”. Writeups or profiles of employees and what they say.

4. Check out companies in same industry
Most companies in the same industry look for similar competencies. Sometimes they differ, depending on organisation culture.

5. External sources
Vault, wetfeet and other insider guides. Bear in mind that they could be subjective.

Yesterday, my friend Cindy whom I had not met in a while texted me “Thought of u today, Joanne. Happy Teacher’s Day! Hope u r lavished with love from your students. U r placed in this industry for a purpose.”

Photo: taken by me on Children’s Day, May 2018 at Nagoya castle.

Her generous spirit and her gift of time refreshed me. (Note that she did not flatter me with falsehood.) Cindy reminded me that she learnt it from me.

We need Cindys in our life.
Highlight others. Refreshing others and being refreshed in return.

I recently watched a video interview of Alibaba CEO Jack Ma by former President Bill Clinton. After the interview, Clinton graciously acknowledged/ introduced the various famous former leaders in the audience.

A friend pointed out this skill and drew the link to Singapore’s best known diplomat Amb Tommy Koh.

His ability to let one feel as if he/she was “the most important person in the room” came across as very genuine to me. Despite some of his personal flaws, Clinton remains very popular and charismatic.

Challenge of the day

1. Highlight other’s strengths.

2. Use introductions to highlight others.
